CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Light Yagami
AGE: 23 by his DOD
CANON: Death NoteNetflix (manga)
NAME: Light Yagami
AGE: 23 by his DOD
CANON: Death Note
CANON HISTORY: Light Yagami @ Death Note Wiki
CANON PERSONALITY: Light is depicted as a studious, intelligent young man with high potential. He certainly has the self-discipline and motivation to spend hours upon hours of his own free time studying for school and maintaining his perfect student status, but his academic success is also in part due to his inherent genius. Academics is shown as something that comes easy to Light, even with all the hard work and cram school he puts into it. He's often seen self-reflecting or spacing out a little during class, but is easy to pick up the topic and give perfect answers when called upon. He is confidant in his results on his practice exams and, as predicted, scores perfectly on his entrance into college. He appears to be at or near native proficiency in English as well, given his ease of translations and his ability to ready the English instructions in the Note. His parents are proud of his accomplishments and while he tends to present them with nonchalance, Light seems comfortable with his (expected) position at the top.
He is a very logical thinker and is able to communicate these thoughts effectively. This is apparent in his explanations of his schemes to Ryuk, where he accounts for every detail and potential misstep that he can think of. (This is not a perfect process, even for someone as smart as he is, but he is able to accommodate for most outcomes.) His ability to recreate and anticipate the actions of others shows that he has an understanding of people as well. This social awareness did not necessarily lead to intense empathy (although the creator describes that was likely his original path), instead in a deeper understanding and educated estimation of another person's motivations through perception. It is his perceptive nature that allows him to, for example, detect the intelligence and cautiousness in Naomi Misora, and let him gain her trust enough to eventually end her.
Perhaps ingrained partly by his father's position in the police force and justice department, Light has a strong personal sense of justice. He sees the world in a very black and white--people are either pure and absolved of sin or guilty and deserving of punishment. This starts out mostly as him internally being displeased with the world around him, but with the addition of the Death Note, Light becomes cataclysmically enabled to become the judge, jury, and executioner of every wrongdoing. Ohba, one of the creators of Death Note, described Light as "a young man who could understand the pain of others", but that his life was effectively "ruined" by the Death Note. And it's very, very true.
At the beginning of the series he is honestly a little bored and "too smart" for the people around him. However, his main disgust with the world helped motivate him towards law and justice. He was on track to follow in his father's footsteps, having already assisted the police force in at least two different murder cases despite being in high school at the time. His intentions, at the start, were truly to help the world. However, as soon as the Death Note entered his life, his intentions started to shift even without his full realization.
Used to being touted as a smart, good boy, so far above the rest, Light develops a high level of arrogance surrounding his own decisions. His initial intent with the Death Note was to punish criminals--people who were already labeled as bad from society. It's something that most people would agree with to varying degrees. However, what society labeled as bad and what Light labeled as impure began to shift. It no longer became "right and wrong", it became "Light" and "everyone else". The formation of a large gathering of anonymous followers praising "Kira" for being their savior didn't help either. Light's hubris continued to grow until he fully accepted that it was his job to rid the world of all evil, leaving only kind people--a world that he would rule over as a god.
It's this twisted world view that continues to become distorted throughout the series. He is smart, but his self-importance is in part what continues to be his downfall. He does not take well to being challenged on an intellectual or emotional level, as shown by his immediate response to Lind L. Tailor's calling him out on television--Light was dubbed as "evil" and therefore, he killed Tailor, then gloated about it. Though he originally only killed criminals, it didn't take long for Light to kill anyone who would attempt to catch him or find out his identity. His judgment becomes swift and ruthless and often unchanging. He will go to almost any length to achieve his goals and defeat his enemies, though he is unwilling to shorten his life at any time. (He wouldn't be able to rule as a god of this new world if he were to die prematurely.) Manipulating those around him to his needs is of little consequence, even those who have devoted themselves to him entirely, like Misa.
And he is a master manipulator. It comes with his ability to read people and make rather accurate assumptions about their motivations and potential actions. Light is known to change his own demeanor and actions to fit the situation, as most people will do, but to a point where he can pass as an entirely different person. He's willing to laugh and smile in a congenial fashion in front of women, flatter whatever traits someone seems to find important about themselves, or even play a little dumb in front of someone he needs to get information from.
Misa in particular presents herself as someone who is willing to be used for Kira's cause and to gain Light's love, and he is all too ready to use her desire for affection in his best interest. Though he clearly finds her presence a nuisance most of the time, he agrees to be her boyfriend and later fiancé in order to use her abilities and to keep her in line. With limits, of course--he tries to control her actions as much as possible, even asking her to quit her job as an actress later on so they can get "married", though the intent is really to keep her out of the public eye so she can use her time acting as Kira while he pretends to be L. Though he would never see it that that light, Misa is also using Light to try and fulfill a role of a partner in her own life, one that he can't ignore because she is as big an asset to him as she is a threat. Their relationship ends up being extremely dysfunctional and heartless on both their parts: Light is willing to put Misa's life in danger and use her love in order to protect his identity and to achieve his goals, and Misa is willing to put everyone else in danger in order to win the affections of someone who she can never win over. Despite this, the few moments Light offers are more than enough to keep Misa going and are just enough that Light is willing to offer.
Kiyomi Takada is another important woman in Light's life. They dated briefly while Light was in college (and supposedly at the time he was also supposed to be dating Misa), his own polished look and status as a golden student making him an appealing match to her own prim and polished reputation. Later she is chosen as the spokeswoman for Kira on NHN, a choice that delights Light. He uses their history together to promise her that together they will rule the world, with Kiyomi as Kira's Queen. She continues to help him plot, and as one might expect this sort of double-dating creates a tension between Kiyomi and Misa, but Light eventually kills her off when she is kidnapped by Mello, but only after she kills Mello for Light.
However, in front of L, he will continue to be a worthy intellectual opponent and asset, without his deep-seated disdain and hubris. In order to gain his trust he has to keep himself on the same intellectual level--it's a balance and a game, of sorts, that keeps L's suspicions from growing but ever-present that Light really is Kira. It's because of this that Light is generally seen as a polite young man who is popular amongst his classmates and colleagues, the kind who is able to pull up a date last minute out of a phonebook of names. Keeping up appearances is important to his cause and staying one-step ahead of everyone else.
Despite this, Light maintains a certain level of fondness for his family. He is visibly upset when his father has a heart attack and later, he continues to try and divert his father's actions from recklessness and putting himself at risk. When his younger sister is kidnapped, Light is also upset and determined to get her back. In the end, however, when his father is on his literal death bed, despite being distressed, Light still tries to get him to write Mello's name in the Death Note. It doesn't work. In the end he becomes completely wrapped up and obsessed with his mission to the point he doesn't care who gets in the way.
We get a glimpse of what Light might have been without the ownership of the Death Note when he forfeits his memories to lead the Kira investigation off of him. He completely loses his ruthless nature and his willingness to put innocent lives in danger. He maintains his strong sense of justice and a desire to capture those who are dubbed as "bad people", in this case it's Kira due to the obvious implications of mass murder, but he lacks the intense judgment and will to punish. He's shown to express more empathy and he uses it to continue the investigation with his name cleared...sort of. He remains chained to L for the duration of the time in order to ensure that he is truly not Kira. In the end, he regains his memories and reverts back to the Light Yagami we have come to know (and love, if you're Misa).
Light is a perfect example of how power corrupts. The Death Note presents a challenge, in some ways, to test its limits and the extent to which he can use it to fulfill his end goals. It also brought someone who is used to being the Best in many ways to new heights, making him feel as if he is placed above others entirely. Opportunity turned a boy who might have been, as Ohba put it, "one of the greatest police leaders in the world", instead lead him down a warped path into become an overzealous serial killer with grandiose ideas that bloomed from good intentions.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Light doesn't have any inherit supernatural abilities, but he does have some skills worth noting:
Of course, if we're talking about supernatural abilities, all those come from Light's Death Note. He does not posesss any powers independent of it and there is a detailed list of rules regarding how one must use it, including limitations, but the general idea is thus: write someone's name in the notebook and they die. This is Light's main tool for casting judgment throughout the entire series.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: Light doesn't have any inherit supernatural abilities, but he does have some skills worth noting:
Intellect: Light is an extremely intelligent and observant individual, able to piece together information very quickly upon acquiring it and immediately applying it to real scenarios and theoretical outcomes, sometimes to dangerous levels. (Such as rigging his desk to explode in the event someone discovered a drawer had a false bottom, if they discovered that at all.) He is used to being at least two steps ahead of most other people, which has helped him greatly in his academic career, and he applies this knowledge in the cat and mouse game he plays with L, and even to play it against himself as he poses as L.
His intelligence is not just academic, it's practical and social as well. It's due to his ability to observe others in detail that he is able to change as needed to fit the given social situation. This leads to his great ability in...
Acting: Not in the theatrical sense, but his ability to pretty much fool almost all the people around him for a number of years is a pretty great asset. To his family and classmates he's a polite, popular, and smart guy. And for the years after he got the Death Note, Light was able to cast doubts in even L's mind as to his guilt as Kira. Once L died, he even acted as L to the greater world at large, leading the task force to his own capture. He manages, through kindness and the appearance of being a hopeful teenager, to learn Naomi Misora's name and leads her to her untimely death. He keeps most of his disdain for the filth of society and his overzealous righteousness under a guise of a strong sense of justice and humility, but it's far from the truth. Light understands how he needs to appear to others to accomplish his goals.
Manipulation: While a product of both his intellect and his ability to hide his true intentions from others, Light is also extremely adept at manipulating the people around him. Though to the extent that he uses them varies, his ability to map out situations and predict people's movements also allows him to create scenarios that will cause them to act in certain ways. His internal monologue is constantly doing this as he tries to anticipate L's, Near's, and Mello's moves throughout the series, as well as creating likely scenarios amongst criminals to shift attention away from him, or essentially his entire relationships with Misa and Kiyomi.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Akira Turner
AU AGE: 23
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None...pretty much a carbon copy of his canon self.
AU NAME: Akira Turner
AU AGE: 23
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None...pretty much a carbon copy of his canon self.
AU HISTORY: Akira Turner was born in Seattle, WA not unlike his Netflix rip-off to an American man and Japanese American, Recolle-born woman. His name "Akira" comes from the kanji 明 meaning "bright" or "light", of which was due to him being the first child the couple had. His mother had moved to Seattle for job opportunities and met a programmer who was fortunate enough to be part of the tech boom. Consequently, Akira grew up in an upper middle class household with little to want for and high expectations. Luckily for his parents, Akira excelled in school and took on extracurricular activities such as the children's debate team and swimming, juggling his multiple obligations with a surprising ease. Too easy, actually. Akira ended up skipping 4th grade and then 7th grade, with high scholastic achievements in math, english, and history.
Though a quieter person by nature, Akira had little trouble socializing with his peers when called for it. Though he rarely brought any friends home, he was often invited to and attended birthday parties and local concerts as long as they didn't conflict with his academic obligations. His school life was interrupted, however, when Akira's father had an opportunity to help become part of a start-up company in his mother's hometown of Recolle. Wanting to be closer to that side of their family, the Turners accepted and Akira transferred to Recolle High in the middle of his freshman year. He was 12, nearly 13 at the time.
As frustrating as it was for him to start over, Akira quickly settled in to the new routine and coursework of his new school. Being closer to his mother's side of the family allowed him more time with his grandparents and the cousin that was living with them, Tatsuma Hiyuu. Though several years younger than Akira, he always seemed generally more at ease around family.
Resuming his status as a bit of an overachiever, yet somehow still laid back about it, in his junior year Akira ends up scoring perfectly on his SAT, allowing him access to a variety of universities and opportunities. He joins the swim team at Recolle High to build on his previous record and boost his academic resume for club participation, as well as taking part in Student Council for both his Junior and Senior years. He's the guy you want to hate but really can't find a reason to fully. Too nice.
In his junior year, however, his life is once again turned on itself when his parents announce that they'll be having some permanent guests at their house. A family friend of theirs, having some...personal issues, and is asking the Turners to look after her young children. So suddenly Akira has two new younger siblings, one of which is the ten year-old Lelouch Lamperouge. It turns out that despite Lelouch being four years his junior, the two have quite a bit in common in regards to interests and academic ability, and Akira might actually consider this guy something of a mix between friend and family.
Akira graduates valedictorian at the age of 16 and decides to stay local, taking his undergraduate degree at Recolle University. At that time he works part-time as a swimming instructor. Though Akira didn't have a specific future in mind, he found himself drawn towards philosophy and government, connecting the ways that human thought has shaped how society is built. He eventually graduated with a Bachelor's in Political Science with an undergraduate in Criminology when he was 20. His 4.0 GPA and excellent LSAT score easily landed him into a Graduate Law program.
As it currently stands, Akira still lives with his family but is looking to move out. He is on his third and final year in graduate school, working part-time as part of an internship at a local law firm, though he's got his eyes set on the District Attorney's office.
Approval received from Tatsuma and Lelouch's players (Dani and Sarah #2), respectively!
AU PERSONALITY: Akira is more of a combination of Light at the very beginning of the series and Light after he's lost his memory of the Death Note. Though still incredibly intelligent and perceptive, and used to being praised for such, his arrogance has not sent him over the edge into the God-complex that he develops as the series progresses.
He is missing the preoccupation with justice and self-righteousness. Though this is inherent in a smaller portion at the beginning of canon and through his memory loss, Akira is less driven by a sense of justice and more by the complexity of a situation. He has been, thus far, personally unaffected by such wide-range injustices, so given the right catalyst, this could change in the future. His AU interest in law has nothing to do with this or family ties, as it does in canon, instead because he wants to solve more complex problems.
Like his canon self, he dates mostly to keep up appearances, though he doesn't have any interest in actual romantic relationships at this point. It just feels like something that's expected of him and so he accomplishes it, since it doesn't take much out of him to do other than give up a few hours of his time every once in a while. Consequenly, he still comes off as polite and well-mannered, able to turn a kind smile on when necessary, but isn't the sort of person to interact with someone out of his own accord without a purpose behind it.
Also like his canon self, he's more fond of his family than other people. Though most of his immediately family is, at this point, NPCs, this goes to the extended family listed in his history section as well.
IN GAME CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT PLANS: Since my intention is for Akira to regain his...Light-ness which also means his desire to enact his will and become a god, etc. etc. I thought I'd lay out some of the plans I'd like to go with to begin and how this will affect him.
➤ Grandparents dying in December (per Dani, Tatsuma's player), which will be the first close-relation death that Akira has had to experience. Since it's family, it'll affect Akira more than just someone he knows. My understanding is it's a car accident so he will likely start to feel the drivers are to blame.
➤ First memory regain is actually his death. This would be enough to freak him out a bit on the sorts of memories that people are regaining through Retrospect and cause him to try and research more. And, you know, see if this mean he's going to die because that would suck.
➤ Next few regains would include Light and L working together to find Kira. So he starts to get the impression that he's a detective or someone who is trying to capture the evils in the world. Kind of a cool calling, right?
➤ Oops, no, future regains include him testing out the Death Note and he starts to come to the realization that the person he and L are trying to capture is, in fact, himself. Bummer.
➤ As he continues to regain memories of the things he does, he starts to see his canon reactions in a light (pun intended) similar to his canon self: maybe his motivations were in the right place! These are bad people he's killing, so perhaps they deserve to be punished.
➤ His birthday is in February, in which he'll turn 24...which would make him survive his canon self (who dies in January). Akira takes this as a sign that this might be his Second Coming, of sorts, outliving his former self to truly enact his will on the world.
The exact timeline is very tentative and would depend a lot on IC events in game. For any sort of extreme actions or plans that he might be brewing, I would of course reach out to mods beforehand and discuss any implications ICly for him as well as for other characters in the game. I am 100% okay with him biting off more than he can chew and getting rightfully punished for it in the end.

AU Changes (August 2018)
➤ Parents separated after Akira was born, father moved to Recolle and Akira went with him. Met his younger brother Goro later when mother moved to Recolle as well.
➤ Moved to Recolle at a younger age (elementary school-age rather than high school)
➤ Aged down--was 24, now 20.
